About us

Social Skills Training Academy helps children between the ages of 3 and 17 years learn the necessary skills to feel confident and knowledgeable in social situations. Historically, social skills instruction was deemed only necessary if a child had a disability. Here at Social Skills Training Academy, we believe that all children can benefit from a strong skill set in the area of social skills. Our curriculum and lessons are designed to help children learn the necessary skills in a productive, fun, and interactive way. We consider individualized needs while providing our students with the foundational skills to handle social situations confidently.

Our Services

Early Preschool

This curriculum is designed to teach and enhance age-appropriate play skills, communication skills, interpersonal relationships skills through interactive lessons and fun hands-on activities to develop greater awareness of the social world.

Preschool

The preschool curriculum aims to teach and increase age-appropriate play skills, social interactions, and communication skills. This research-based program incorporates engaging and fun activities that promote necessary social skills to develop strong social relationships.

Elementary

This curriculum is designed to foster age-appropriate play skills, social skills and develop skills for independence in social situations. This age group is introduced to topics that increase social interactions and social communication skills while utilizing evidence-based practices.

Later Elementary

This comprehensive curriculum aims to further enhance and strengthen the social skills from the early elementary program and introduce topics that foster successful independence in social situations. This model focuses on social interactions, interpersonal relationships, and communication skills.

Middle School and High School

The teen social skills curriculum aims to facilitate building social relationships, enhancing interpersonal skills and communication skills. Individuals are introduced to topics that involve age-appropriate interests and the execution of skills needed to maintain friendships.

Social Skills Coach

Social Skills Training Academy offers individualized social skills support in the form of social skills coaching. These sessions are 1:1, and the session’s focus is on individual goals and needs. This service is beneficial for individuals with good foundational social skills but would benefit from having input from a skilled practitioner in various social skills areas. Our social skills coaches are available for anyone from ages 7 through adulthood.

A statement from Dr. Van Fleet

In today’s world, parents worry more than ever about their child’s ability to be successful in social situations. With the addition of video gaming and social media platforms, children do not have the same access to in person social interactions. Due to this current phenomenon, many children lack the necessary skills to be successful when interacting with the peer group.

Many children suffer from issues such as social isolation, lack of confidence in their social abilities, and fears of being rejected. Not to mention, the latest quarantine mandates due to COVID have not helped children feel safe and ready to interact in their social world.

The good news is we can help. Our social skills classes are designed to teach developmentally appropriate social skills in an environment that is fun, interactive, and effective. Our group members are given the necessary tools to help them feel confident and ready to be a part of a variety of different social situations.

Dr. Van Fleet

Dr. Van Fleet is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at the doctoral level. She is the director of Behavior Insights, Inc. and Social Skills Training Academy. Dr. Van Fleet has over a decade of experience and knowledge in the area of social skills. She has taught and guest lectured at major universities in the area of social skills. She started Social Skills Training Academy on the premise that all children can benefit from having direct access to social skills training. Dr. Van Fleet designed a very specialized curriculum that incorporates age-appropriate social skills in the context of a fun learning environment where children can be successful.
